Keeping view the importance of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Education the higher authorities of the University unanimously agreed to start composite DVM degree program. For this purpose the Department of Animal Health was created in 2004. The introduction of new degree program will broaden the job opportunity of our graduates both in public and private sectors, and will allow our students to compete with those of other universities.
Aims
To standardize uniform degree programs in Veterinary and Animal Husbandry over the entire country
To produce graduates with professional knowledge and skills compatible to jobs and development at the national and international level
To match the professional standards of degree programs in Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences to those required by the national regulatory bodies
Establishment of this Department was a pre-requisite for the five years composite DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) degree replacing the previous BSc Hons AH degree program. The requirement for admission in the DVM is FSc Pre-Medical subjects. Those admitted in the program have been on top of the merit as compared to other disciplines of the university. Since it started in January 2004, the third semester (DVM second profession) is in progress with around 40 students. This department with others runs the new program jointly. The program has been supported and recognized by the Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council. The department plans to launch postgraduate degree programs by the times the required facilities are established.
Teaching facilities
The Department of Animal Health created to provide teaching and laboratory facilities. In the initial stages, collaboration was sought to have our students’ access to the laboratories of Veterinary Research Institute and Veterinary Hospitals of the province. A mega project entitled “Strengthening of Teaching and Research Capabilities of Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences” has been approved from HEC Islamabad and its implementation has already been started since September 2004. The award of construction of buildings including academic block, veterinary clinics and artificial insemination centers, semen production unit and breeding center is in process. The University is making every effort to ensure the completion of the project within the target time (June 2007).
Future vision
The Department envisions introducing postgraduate specialized degrees in the Animal Health by the time the essential teaching and research facilities are established. The department has visible linkages with the farmers, industrialists and development organizations within the country and abroad. Recently, a consultative group on livestock industry has been proposed and farmers included in the Departmental Board of Studies.

In general, there has been inadequate animal identification, poor record keeping, and unrestric ted breeding in the native flocks of the province, which has limited the efforts to measure individual animal’s performance. Consequently the genetic potential of the native stock has been never adequately assessed particularly in relation to certain traits as disease resistance, fertility and adaptability to the usually difficult environment in which they must survive and produce. In addition, there are areas in which the extensive crossing between local and exotic sheep in Hazara and Swat, etc, and cattle throughout the province, has resulted in a continuum of genetic types. Attempts to characterize local animals, evaluate their genetic potentials and design coordinated large-scale selection breeding and genetic improvement programs are further complicated when there are few distinct breeds and only highly varied or non-descript stock from which to choose individuals for production trials. The lack of livestock performance data also hampers efforts to develop productive animals specifically adapted for introduction to a particular ecological zone.
Keeping in view the above field conditions and the students interest in this specialization, it was realized that independent department in Animal Breeding and Genetics be established to launch a specialized postgraduate degree (MSc and PhD) program. The new specialization program has replaced the MSc Hons Animal Husbandry composite degree program with the course work jointly offered by other departments and thesis research in the specializations. Since the department established in 2004, about six students were registered in the field. Courses in Animal Breeding and Genetics have also been part of the curricula of undergraduate classes.
Research facilities
The research activities of the department include generating baseline data on the performance of indigenous ruminant animals in order to initiate selection procedures for upgrading the genetic potential of indigenous stock. The survival, fertility and performance of local and local/exotic crosses will be compared in order to identify superior types, well adapted to local conditions. These individuals can then serve as foundation stock in well planned breeding programs designed to produce animals for distribution to the small holders. In addition to our own model farm, the department is linked with other three research stations and its students have easy access to the private farms where joint research studies are under way to test their research themes right on farm level.

In addition to this, other courses and trainings are offered to undergraduate students (DVM), farmers and officers of the tribal (FATA) and settled areas. The department has two separate laboratories for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. These laboratories, together with a livestock complex on the campus, offer facilities (for testing feeds, animal trials; metabolic crates, rumen fistulated steers to do metabolic studies, forage land, and dairy animals) for students’ practical and research that integrate the whole range of applied training in Animal Nutrition. Recent addition of research facilities such as, Feed Technology Center, Large and Small Animal Houses under the HEC mega project further added to the capacity building of the department.
The department has several long-term research projects funded by PARC, HEC and PSF, Islamabad. These projects have not only strengthened the research capability of the department but also provided unique opportunity for participation of postgraduate students in advance research. The course work prepares students to effectively assume leadership in the livestock sector with a strong background of Animal Nutrition for serving animal husbandry needs of the farmers and industries. Students design their thesis manuscript, to conduct basic and adaptive research for improving livestock nutrition, to increase farm income in low (small-holder) and high input (commercial) systems and to develop linkages with national and international organizations in programs for sustainable development of livestock sector.
The degree programs are designed to prepare students with the following aims: 1. To effectively assume leadership in the livestock sector with a strong background of animal nutrition for serving animal husbandry needs of he farmers and industries
2. To conduct basic and adaptive resech for improving livestock nutrition and to increase farm income in low (small holders) and high input (commercial) systems
3. To develop linkages with national and international organization in education, research and development programs for sustainable development of livestock sector
Academic programs
The department is running DVM degree program jointly with other departments of the faculty. In addition, the department offers postgraduate degree program (MSc and Ph.D) specialized in Animal Nutrition. The department has two separate laboratories for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. These laboratories together with a new livestock complex on the campus, offer facilities for students’ practical and research that integrate whole range of disciplinary fields form basic to applied animal nutrition. Several short trainings, workshops and seminars are also scheduled every year.
Research Activities
The Department has two well equipped nutrition laboratories for evaluation of livestock feeds, forages and fiber analysis, in vitro fermentation and metabolic studies. Besides others equipments, there are gas chromatography, UV/visible spectrophotometer, and Kjeltec System of Teckator available for student research and practical. Personal computers are also used for data analysis and interpretation. Recent addition of research facilities such as metabolic crates and rumen fistulated steers for detailed metabolic studies and practical demonstration of students has further added to the capacity building of the Department. The department has several long-term research projects funded by PARC and PSF, Islamabad . These projects have not only strengthened the research capability of the department but also provided unique opportunity for participation of postgraduate students in advanced research. Land for forage research is also available at the new development farm of this university.
