Stages 1 and 2: You receive a broad introduction to agriculture (see ‘Agriculture – All Degrees’ below).
Stage 3: Core modules develop key areas relating to animal production science such as animal breeding and growth; farm animal nutrition; and forage utilisation. Optional modules enable you to obtain expertise in related areas such as product quality and marketing; animal welfare and environment; or tropical animal production. You are encouraged to compare and contrast different livestock enterprises and to integrate scientific knowledge into sound production systems, considering the demands of both the market and the population. There are visits to look at livestock systems on farms and at research centres.
Agriculture – All Degrees
Our degree programmes provide an in-depth understanding of agriculture at both farm and industrial levels, based on agricultural sciences, production studies and business management. You are introduced to a range of farming practices on the University’s and other farms.
Each of our agricultural degrees carries a specialist theme (or Honours Option) which allows you to study a particular area of agriculture in detail. These Honours Options reflect different career paths available after graduation.
Whichever Honours Option you apply for, modules in Stages 1 and 2 are common. This means that if you are unsure which Honours Option is right for you, you can defer your decision until the end of Stage 2.
Stage 1: This covers all the basic scientific and quantitative aspects of the subject such as soil, crop and animal science, and economics. You are also introduced to laboratory work and develop skills in microcomputing. A series of visits to the University farms covers some of the more practical aspects of agriculture.
Stage 2: You apply the principles established in Stage 1 to both animal and crop production and to farm management.
Stage 3: Following one of the four Honours Options allows you to study, in depth, an area of agriculture that particularly interests you. Each Honours Option balances compulsory core modules with a wide range of additional choices making up a third of the modules taken in the final year. You also write a dissertation on a subject of your choice

The Veterinary School curriculum is a four year program consisting of two years of basic science studies, and two years of clinical work leading to the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). The University uses a combination of formal classes in Antigua and advanced communication information and technology to execute the curriculum.
The pre-clinical phase of the curriculum spans two years and students are required to take courses in Anatomy, Histology, Embryology, Neuroanatomy, Physiology, Animal Nutrition and Biochemistry.
The para-clinical phase consists of courses in Pathology, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Microbiology, Virology, Immunology, Parasitology & Entomology, Ethics & Jurisprudence, Public Health, Preventive & Hygiene and Physical Diagnosis.
In addition, during the clinical phase, students undertake clinical rotations at the Veterinary Hospitals affiliated to the School of Veterinary Medicine. These clinical rotations include Large & Small Animal Medicine, Large & Small Animal Surgery, and Large & Small Animal Theriogenology.

Animal industry science consists of the basic studies of industrial animals including livestock
and their application and the study of how they are related with social environments.
Specialized courses comprise Division of Animal Business Management and Informatives where students learn and study various phases of food production, consumption promotion, and preservation of environments; Division of Nature Management and Agricultural Economics whose major concern is the collaboration and coexistence between urban consumptive areas and rural productive areas; Division of Animal Nutrition whose major concern is about what kinds of grass are effective to herbivorous animals and to what extent, the utility of microorganisms, the improvement of chicken eggs. etc.; Division of Animal Physiology where investigations are carried out on such topics as the mechanism of chicken’s blood production, the relationship between the protein metabolism and the efficient production of chicken; Division of Animal Breeding and Reproduction where they study how to improve the quality of milk, and how it is inherited, and the mechanism of embryo and the possibility of its human manipulation; Division of Animal Biochemistry where they investigate, for example, how micronutrients work on the flesh of herbivorous animals.

In addition to this, other courses and trainings are offered to undergraduate students (DVM), farmers and officers of the tribal (FATA) and settled areas. The department has two separate laboratories for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. These laboratories, together with a livestock complex on the campus, offer facilities (for testing feeds, animal trials; metabolic crates, rumen fistulated steers to do metabolic studies, forage land, and dairy animals) for students’ practical and research that integrate the whole range of applied training in Animal Nutrition. Recent addition of research facilities such as, Feed Technology Center, Large and Small Animal Houses under the HEC mega project further added to the capacity building of the department.
The department has several long-term research projects funded by PARC, HEC and PSF, Islamabad. These projects have not only strengthened the research capability of the department but also provided unique opportunity for participation of postgraduate students in advance research. The course work prepares students to effectively assume leadership in the livestock sector with a strong background of Animal Nutrition for serving animal husbandry needs of the farmers and industries. Students design their thesis manuscript, to conduct basic and adaptive research for improving livestock nutrition, to increase farm income in low (small-holder) and high input (commercial) systems and to develop linkages with national and international organizations in programs for sustainable development of livestock sector.
The degree programs are designed to prepare students with the following aims: 1. To effectively assume leadership in the livestock sector with a strong background of animal nutrition for serving animal husbandry needs of he farmers and industries
2. To conduct basic and adaptive resech for improving livestock nutrition and to increase farm income in low (small holders) and high input (commercial) systems
3. To develop linkages with national and international organization in education, research and development programs for sustainable development of livestock sector
Academic programs
The department is running DVM degree program jointly with other departments of the faculty. In addition, the department offers postgraduate degree program (MSc and Ph.D) specialized in Animal Nutrition. The department has two separate laboratories for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. These laboratories together with a new livestock complex on the campus, offer facilities for students’ practical and research that integrate whole range of disciplinary fields form basic to applied animal nutrition. Several short trainings, workshops and seminars are also scheduled every year.
Research Activities
The Department has two well equipped nutrition laboratories for evaluation of livestock feeds, forages and fiber analysis, in vitro fermentation and metabolic studies. Besides others equipments, there are gas chromatography, UV/visible spectrophotometer, and Kjeltec System of Teckator available for student research and practical. Personal computers are also used for data analysis and interpretation. Recent addition of research facilities such as metabolic crates and rumen fistulated steers for detailed metabolic studies and practical demonstration of students has further added to the capacity building of the Department. The department has several long-term research projects funded by PARC and PSF, Islamabad . These projects have not only strengthened the research capability of the department but also provided unique opportunity for participation of postgraduate students in advanced research. Land for forage research is also available at the new development farm of this university.

Colleges of Veterinary Medicine expect incoming students to have a broad background in the biological and physical sciences with students completing at least three courses in biology including general biology, genetics, microbiology as the most requested, two semesters of both general chemistry and organic chemistry, as well as at least one semester of biochemistry, and two semesters of general physics. A course in animal nutrition is required by nearly half of the schools. Bethany College courses that satisfy the usual requirements are: Biology 100, 180, 290, and 343; Chemistry 111 -11 2, 221-222, and 351-352; Physics 201-202; and General Science 473 and 474.
Other typical course requirements include at least one math class and two
semesters of English composition and literature. Another major requirement
is documented experience with animals and work with veterinarians. Some
large animal experience may be obtained by enrolling in General Science
293. Students can gain valuable experience working with area veterinarians.
Students who can claim West Virginia residency status may obtain a position as a
contract student at one of three schools: Ohio State University; University of Georgia;
and Tuskegee Institute. There are at present 13 contract seats among the three schools.
Eligible students must complete the application for the West Virginia Contract Seat, which can be obtained from the Division of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at West Virginia University when starting the application process for Veterinary School. All students interested in attending veterinary school should review the admission requirements of any veterinary college they may likely attend as requirements among the colleges vary widely.

Animal Nutrition Science is a traditional excellent major of our university with its own specialty and fame. The training aim of this major is to cultivate practical and professional talents for the fields of education, research, technology promotion, entity administration of animal production. And as the main course of this major, it is very important in the realization of major training aim. Its basic task is to provide theoretical basis and practice reference for the scientific animal production. The purpose of this course is to stimulate the study interests of students by using various teaching methods and device, so that they can master the basic theory and technique of this course, study the physical effect of the nutritious materials in the feed and the animals’ needs in it and different influential factors; master the concepts of various nutrients and examining principle, understand the evaluation and setting methods of the nutrient usage. In this course, we are aimed to foster the students’ capability in practice, problem analyzing and solving via the teaching model of combining self-study and practice.

Research Highlights
Animal Genetics and Breeding
Breeding and preservation of Taiwan native chicken has been conducted for many years. The breeding selection for animal production is developed through the application of molecular biotechnologies and genetic markers. Also several genome research projects regarding reproduction, diseaseresistance, behavior, proteome and functional genomic studies on Taiwan native chicken have been conducted. In order to identify selection markers of critical economic traits, DNA microarray and SNP (Single nucleotide polymorphism) studies have been performed to genotype swine population in Taiwan for improving swine genetic traits.
Nutrition and Feeds
Research has been focused on the improvement of feed utilization, production and management techniques for poultry and animals. Current researches are focused on developing the biotic products for feed additives and increasing the feeding value of feedstuff by using biotechnology.
Animal Processing
It covers the processing of milk, meat, egg and animal byproducts, with an emphasis on making best use of their physical and biochemical characteristics.
Animal Management
The study is aimed at applying modern computer technology to animal farming. Current research projects are focused on the development of the decision support systems online, expert systems and simulation models for animal production.
Molecular Biology
Studies are focused on the applications of transgenic technology to improve egg and meat qualities, and evaluate the productions of foreign proteins for medical uses in transgenic animals.
Physiology and Reproductive Biology
Research projects are focused on signal transduction of myogenic stem cells, regulations of hormones, and the effects of day light on milk production and reproduction of seasonal breeders. Researches pertaining to in vitro maturation, fertilization and culture systems, cryopreservation of oocytes and embryos, animal cloning, proteome analysis of transgenic animals and transgenesis are currently emphasized in reproductive biology.
