The Graduate Diploma in Veterinary Clinical Science Program is designed to endow the veterinarians with specialised experiences in veterinary clinical practices. The Program is devided into 4 specialist tracts;

During the one-year course each candidate will receive first hand training with the Faculty’s Specialists using the best clinical, surgical and diagnostic tools available in the country, including attending clinical seminars to discuss various cases in details.

The course provides students with an understanding of physiology, pathology, surgery, biotechnology and diseases in animal reproduction that can be applied effectively in animal research, management, care and production. The program is the first in the Faculty of Veterinary Science, which provides great breadth of specialist expertise, coursework and facilities including laboratories, farms contact and animal teaching hospital accessible to all students. It also has been strengthened by international collaborations from veterinary colleges worldwide. Graduates from this research-rich taught Ph.D. will be prepared for employment in research establishments, education as well as non-governmental organisations.”

Explore animal sciences such as anatomy, nutrition and reproduction, including hands-on sessions in on-campus laboratories and animal centers. Our beef center has more than 50 purebred cows; the dairy center has about 100 milking Holsteins; and the sheep center has over 100 breeding Suffolk ewes.

During your senior year, you will integrate lessons from business and animal science when you evaluate real-world issues. You might determine the efficiency of a cow-calf operation, examine how horses are bred and sold, or develop a plan to market a swine vaccine.

You’ll learn from teachers involved in today’s most pressing issues in animal and veterinary science.

Acquire as much experience working with animals as possible. Complete internships in animal health, and volunteer to care for animals on campus.

The Graduate Program in Animal Science prepares human resources for teaching activities in universities, research and technical support, deepening knowledge in specialized areas of Animal Science at Master’s (MS) and Doctorate (DS) levels. Both programs offer training in Bioclimatology and Animal Reproduction, Fodder Cropping and Pasture, Genetics and Animal Breeding, Monogastric Nutrition and Production, Ruminant Nutrition and Production. The Graduate Program in Animal Science also offers the Master’s program in Monogastric and Ruminant Nutrition and Production.

The UFV Veterinary Medicine program aims to prepare professionals with an eclectic profile, able to act in different veterinarian activity fields, that is whyUFV Veterinarian undergraduates acquire knowledge in the most varied areas, such as: clinical medicine, surgery and obstetrics; reproduction, artificial insemination and new biotechniques; prevention and control methods of animal diseases; nutrition, genetic breeding and domestic animal breeding; technology, hygiene and inspection of products of animal origin; livestock project planning; public health; research project planning and development.

The program takes five years, with the possibility of conclusion in a minimum of four and a half years, and a maximum of seven and a half years.

Since its creation, there has been great competition at the university entrance examination for this program. Most of the faculty has Doctorate Ph.D. degrees and all the professors have a full-time contract. In the Ministry of Education evaluation, the program was awarded maximum grades, due to its faculty qualification, didactic-pedagogical organization, and facilities.

The curricular courses and other important activities for undergraduates’ professional training are offered by different UFV departments. Students can use modern, well equipped and functional laboratories designed for classes of anatomy, pathological anatomy, histopathology, clinical pathology, toxicology, animal reproduction, physiopathology, physiology and pharmacology, technology and inspection of products of animal origin, microbiology, parasitology, preventive veterinary medicine, animal science medicine, computer science, and others basic subjects.

There is also a fully equipped Veterinary Hospital, with a modern structure and specialized laboratories (ultrasound, endoscopy, X-ray, surgical suite, etc.). There is a large outpatient demand, for small or large animals, which provides a great amount of didactic material for practical lessons, offering students the best conditions for practice and adaptation to the job market.

The UFV campus has a structure that allows practical lessons, which avoids trips to distant regions. Despite these facilities, there are daily tours, with small groups of students, to local farms near Viçosa for practical lessons.

Cattle, swine, horses, sheep, goats, poultry, rabbits, fish and frogs are also raised in the campus, offering students a daily contact with those animals, through practical lessons, training periods, or research activities.

In addition, the UFV possesses an animal meal plant that supplies food to the animals, and milk and dairy product processing plant that packs, produces and commercializes many products. These facilities and activities are also important for professional training.

The UFV Veterinary Medicine Program began in 1977 and was recognized by Decree/MEC N.713/81.

The program of the Graduate in Veterinary Science, Federal University of Lavras, Masters level was recommended by the Council of Scientific Technical CAPES in 2004 and accredited by the Ministry of Education since 2007. The course at the level of PhD was recommended in 2008. In the evaluation of the CAPES program got the concept 4. Consisting of a faculty of 14 teachers doctors, the program aims to promote the training of key staff to work in research institutions, education and extension, as well as private initiative, through a sound scientific training in line with the new advances in research. Attentive to social demands, the program aims to identify priorities for regional development and national, as well as the commitment to seek solutions to major problems in the area of influence of UFLA.
The Department of Veterinary Medicine (VMD) of UFLA account, currently with an infrastructure consisting of 13 laboratories: Animal Anatomy, Histology Animal Veterinary Parasitology (Protozoologia / Acarologia), Veterinary Parasitology (Helminthological) Epidemiology, Physiology and Pharmacology, Pathology Veterinary Medicine, Clinical Pathology, Animal Virology, Microbiology, Veterinary Medical Radiology, Animal Reproduction, Mycology; addition to a surgical block, kennel and animal. Also has a laboratory equipped for the study of infectious and parasitic diseases in aquatic animals (AQUAVET). In 2004 was inaugurated the Veterinary Hospital for Small Animals. Structures are available for the development of research projects, the Laboratory of Animal Nutrition and facilities of the Fisheries Sector, Suinocultura, Bovinocultura Milk, Caprinocultura, rabbits and Ovinocultura, linked to the Department of Zootecnia of UFLA (DZO).
