Zoology Postgraduate at GC University Lahore

Zoology is the oldest seat of learning imparting instructions at the Postgraduate level in Pakistan. The Postgraduate Programme at the Department was launched in 1908. In addition, it was the first centre to start teaching Zoology in this part of the Subcontinent until 1920 when the University of the Punjab established its Department of Zoology. The Zoology Department of the University of the Punjab was also housed in the building of the Department of Zoology at the then Government College Lahore and continued functioning here till 1963. During these years, the Zoology faculties of Government College Lahore and the University of the Punjab jointly managed the Postgraduate Programme.

In 1963, the Department of Zoology initiated its independent MSc Zoology Programme as a result of the untiring efforts of Dr. Nazir Ahmad (who had been promoted to Principal, Government College Lahore), Prof. Naseer-ud-Din Ahmad (Professor and Chairperson, Department of Zoology) and Dr. Ahsanul Islam (Professor of Zoology). Since the Department of Zoology had been affiliated with the University of the Punjab during all these years, it offered courses approved by the Board of Studies in Zoology of the University of the Punjab.

After attaining the status of an autonomous institution in 1997, and that of a University in 2002, curricula were upgraded and modernised in accordance with international standards.

Zoology Degree at Rajshahi University of Engineering And Technology

Zoology had its origin in the Department of Botany in 1969-70. With the rapid advances in the field of animal science, it was felt necessary to extend it into an independent and full-fledged Department. Thus the Department of Zoology started functioning in the middle of 1972. Late Professor Dr. Mustafizur Rahman was appointed the first Headed. Since then the Department of has developed at a fast rate to its present state with a view to meeting the growing demand for trained personnel in the fields of classical as well as applied Zoology. Many changes have taken place over the last three decades.

Many of the ex-students have found careers in academic and research organizations, while other have already secured important positions in the public and private sectors of the country. The exchange of ideas between staff and students is encouraged through seminars where research findings are presented and discussed.

Zoology Degree at Punjab Agricultural University

Zoology came into being after the bifurcation of the Department of Zoology and Entomology in 1972. The Fisheries section of the Department was separated as an independent Department of Fisheries in 1994, which was merged again in 2002 and the Department was renamed as the Department of Zoology and Fisheries. The Department then existed at three centres – in the ground floor of the Biological wing. Small Animal Colony, and Fisheries Research Complex with modern facilities to work in the areas of Fisheries, vertebrate Pest Management, Reproductive Biology, Parasitology and Immunodiagnostics. With the creation of the Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in 2006, the Fisheries section and Small Animal Colony have been shifted to that University and the Department has been renamed as the Department of Zoology. At present, the Department exists at the ground floor of the Biological Wing and the second floor of the main building of theCollege of Basic Sciences & Humanities. The Resident Instruction Programme in Zoology comprises undergraduate instruction for the students of College of Agriculture and College of Home Science and post-graduation instruction leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Zoology.

The postgraduate students are trained in Agricultural Ornithology, Rodent Control, Fisheries, Functional Faunal Biodiversity, Reproductive Biology, Parasitology and Immunodiagnostics. At present, the emphasis is on development, commercialization and transfer of technologies for (i) effective, efficient and eco-friendly methods of vertebrate and (non-arthropod) invertebrate pest management, (ii) functional (nutritional , pharmaceutical, and bioindicative) aspects of faunal biodiversity in inland aquatic ecosystems, (iii) Fisheries (iv) Vermicomposting, (v) Reproductive Biology (fertility regulation and use of biomarkers), and (vi) Immunodiagnostics.

The faculty of the Department is actively involved in running several research projects sponsored by different funding agencies like ICAR, UGC, SRTT and Punjab State Govt. besides extending transfer of technology services. The Department is also running Zoological Society, which is a corporate member of the International Society of Zoological Sciences, China.

Zoology Major at Miami University Of Ohio

Top ranking: Historically, the Zoology program has ranked at or near the top for number of majors in the College of Arts and Science and in the University, and Miami’s Department of Zoology remains among the largest undergraduate programs in Zoology in the nation.

Strong faculty/student collaborations: Faculty concentrate on quality and effectiveness in teaching as well as research. Even introductory classes are taught by senior faculty. Students have many opportunities for internships through faculty connections with organizations such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Argonne National Laboratory. Undergraduates have the opportunity to do extensive research projects, to publish their work in scientific journals, and present their research at national and international conferences.

A broad range of courses: One of the program’s many strengths is its diversity in curriculum and research, with areas of study ranging from animal behavior to physiology to molecular biology to ecology. This breadth gives students hands-on experience in research, publication, and presentation. Miami emphasizes a full range of systematics courses in entomology (the study of insects), ichthyology (fishes), herpetology (reptiles and amphibians), ornithology (birds), and mammalogy (mammals). With the awareness of biodiversity and ecological concerns today, a sound knowledge of the taxonomy of different species is crucial to understanding these concerns. Many colleges and universities have reduced or eliminated these courses from their curriculums.

Excellent career and professional preparation: The department is extremely successful in placing its graduates in appropriate employment and in preparing them for career-long accomplishments. In addition to working on campus, many of our students participate in summer internships off-campus at places such as the Cincinnati Zoo, the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, and the Argonne National Lab.

Work experience: The Department of Zoology employs numerous students during the academic year and the summer. Responsibilities range from performing routine office duties, conducting laboratory experiments, providing assistance in laboratory classes, caring for animals, and maintaining museum specimens. We encourage you to submit your application for employment in the spring for the upcoming academic year.

Outdoor wildlife reserve: Adjacent to campus, the reserve and its adjoining areas contain more than 1,000 acres of diverse habitats, including streams, flood plains, farm ponds, forests, a pine plantation, and grasslands

The Ecology Research Center: Located two miles from campus, this is a 178-acre area of diverse habitats, including a 1,000-square-foot building which contains a bioenergetics laboratory, a controlled environmental chamber, animal room facilities, and basic ecological equipment. There are also outdoor areas for research, several newly constructed experimental ponds, experimental vegetation plots, replicate aviaries, prairie research plots, and a modern precipitation chemistry and weather station.

Top-notch facilities: The Department of Zoology is located in Pearson Hall, a state-of-the-art biological sciences building boasting excellent research and animal care facilities and equipment. The electron microscope facility, one of the best in the nation, includes both transmission and scanning electron microscopes in two labs. Computers are used in all of the biological science first-year course labs, and many divisions of the department, such as neuroanatomy and endocrinology, have their own computer labs. In the genetics laboratory, computers are tied into national data bases enabling students to study the work of top researchers. The laboratories accommodate research in behavioral studies, aquatic and animal studies, biochemistry, and physiology.
