Veterinary Medicine provides curricula in species-oriented specific fields, which include avian medicine, aquatic animal medicine, companion animal medicine, swine medicine and ruminant medicine. The staffs are well equipped with long term practice and research experiences in particular species including individual management, farm management, disease prevention, treatment and control as well as epidemiology. The collaborations between livestock producers and the faculty members together with the diagnostic laboratory facilities provide great advantages in the survey and the research on some livestock diseases. Problem-oriented and field trials are considered to be major attributions. Our programs are flexibleand students can switch between species within the program provided without the need to resign from the program.

This postdoctoral (post-DVM) program prepares graduates for careers in comparative medicine. This graduate program can be coupled with residency training and meet the requirements for eligibility for the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) certification examination.

There is a long history of successful training in comparative medicine.

Veterinary Sciences and the  Animal Science have combined their efforts to offer B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in animal and veterinary sciences (see listing under this title). Several options within the major are available including preveterinary medicine and animal biology. Undergraduate course offerings of the Department of Veterinary Sciences are listed under the title of pathobiology. They were designed to familiarize students with the principles of animal disease and the basic biological and biomedical sciences.

The department operates the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory, an animal disease diagnostic laboratory. This laboratory provides valuable hands-on experience for students interested in laboratory animal care, laboratory procedures, and research. Excellent faculty advisers are available for students interested in preveterinary medicine, microbiology, and animal biology.

The mission of the Breathitt Veterinary Center (BVC) is to provide rapid, accurate diagnostic data that enables veterinarians to make appropriate treatment decisions. The BVC is part of an interdependent team composed of the animal owner, veterinarian, and diagnostic laboratory dedicated to the efficient production of safe animal products to the consumers of Kentucky. The BVC uses the latest scientific knowledge, equipment, and techniques to reduce losses from animal diseases and to promote animal health.

The BVC is fully accredited for all animal species by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD). The scientific disciplines of Pathology, Microbiology, Molecular Diagnostics, Toxicology, Serology, and Virology are provided in the facility. The lists on the following pages include most of the diagnostic procedures performed by the BVC. The BVC continually expands its testing capabilities and strives to incorporate advancements in scientific tests and equipment into its operations.
