In keeping further with our institution’s philosophy of veterinary medical education geared towards improved livestock production characterized by qualitative animal healthcare and global food security, we have developed a veterinary medical curriculum leading to the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) for Pre-Veterinarian Graduates. The program is an attempt to increase the number of veterinarians in the world, thereby improving animal healthcare globally and addressing the acute food shortage in most parts of the developing and tropical countries.

With the variety and diversity of career opportunities within the veterinary profession such as in Medicine (private veterinary medical practice and part of primary healthcare team) , Agriculture (livestock production), Public Service (Food Quality Control, meat inspection, regulatory medicine, wildlife conservation, Zoo Veterinarian), Research (care of laboratory, small and large animals involved in research and specializations as laboratory diagnostician or researcher), Pharmaceutical Companies and Food Industries,, the veterinarian will always be in great demand and will be respected by society. Our veterinary medical curriculum is designed to provide participants in the program the opportunity to receive qualitative veterinary education towards global improvement in animal healthcare and livestock production. The method of integrated teaching which we adopt in execution most parts of the curriculum prepares our graduates for the diversity if roles which a veterinarian is expected to play in the society.

The minimum requirement to participate in the traditional program leading to the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) is the successful completion of pre-veterinary program in Universities or colleges.

The required pre-professional and science courses which should be taken and passed during the pre-veterinary program are:

General Chemistry with Laboratory
6 semester credits,

or 8 quarter credits.

Organic Chemistry with Laboratory
6 semester credits

or 8 quarter credits.

Biochemistry

(Emphasis on Animal Biochemistry and Metabolism)
3 semester credits

or 4 quarter credits.

Genetics
3 semester credits

or 4 quarter credits.

The Veterinary School curriculum is a four year program consisting of two years of basic science studies, and two years of clinical work leading to the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). The University uses a combination of formal classes in Antigua and advanced communication information and technology to execute the curriculum.

The pre-clinical phase of the curriculum spans two years and students are required to take courses in Anatomy, Histology, Embryology, Neuroanatomy, Physiology, Animal Nutrition and Biochemistry.

The para-clinical phase consists of courses in Pathology, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Microbiology, Virology, Immunology, Parasitology & Entomology, Ethics & Jurisprudence, Public Health, Preventive & Hygiene and Physical Diagnosis.

In addition, during the clinical phase, students undertake clinical rotations at the Veterinary Hospitals affiliated to the School of Veterinary Medicine. These clinical rotations include Large & Small Animal Medicine, Large & Small Animal Surgery, and Large & Small Animal Theriogenology.

Keeping view the importance of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Education the higher authorities of the University unanimously agreed to start composite DVM degree program. For this purpose the Department of Animal Health was created in 2004. The introduction of new degree program will broaden the job opportunity of our graduates both in public and private sectors, and will allow our students to compete with those of other universities.
Aims

To standardize uniform degree programs in Veterinary and Animal Husbandry over the entire country

To produce graduates with professional knowledge and skills compatible to jobs and development at the national and international level

To match the professional standards of degree programs in Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences to those required by the national regulatory bodies

Establishment of this Department was a pre-requisite for the five years composite DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) degree replacing the previous BSc Hons AH degree program. The requirement for admission in the DVM is FSc Pre-Medical subjects. Those admitted in the program have been on top of the merit as compared to other disciplines of the university. Since it started in January 2004, the third semester (DVM second profession) is in progress with around 40 students. This department with others runs the new program jointly. The program has been supported and recognized by the Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council. The department plans to launch postgraduate degree programs by the times the required facilities are established.

Teaching facilities

The Department of Animal Health created to provide teaching and laboratory facilities. In the initial stages, collaboration was sought to have our students’ access to the laboratories of Veterinary Research Institute and Veterinary Hospitals of the province. A mega project entitled “Strengthening of Teaching and Research Capabilities of Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences” has been approved from HEC Islamabad and its implementation has already been started since September 2004. The award of construction of buildings including academic block, veterinary clinics and artificial insemination centers, semen production unit and breeding center is in process. The University is making every effort to ensure the completion of the project within the target time (June 2007).

Future vision

The Department envisions introducing postgraduate specialized degrees in the Animal Health by the time the essential teaching and research facilities are established. The department has visible linkages with the farmers, industrialists and development organizations within the country and abroad. Recently, a consultative group on livestock industry has been proposed and farmers included in the Departmental Board of Studies.

Livestock and poultry contribute significantly to the agro-based economy of Bangladesh. Commercial enterprises aimed for dairy, poultry and meat production are taking the strong roots and the demand for diversified veterinary services expanding with the increased economic growth of the country. Keeping these views in consideration, the department started its endeavor in 2004 in order to fostering quality veterinary education and to produce creative, efficient and modern professional leaders to face the demand of 21st century. The department offers course-credit semester based multidisciplinary Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree. Recently, the department introduced M Phil and PhD program. The graduates of this department have a high prospect to join various prestigious jobs including Bangladesh Civil Service, Government & Non-Government organizations and self-employing income generating activities. A total of 51 students of three batches are studying at present. Currently, 10 teachers are engaged in teaching and research in the department.

Our pre-veterinary program will prepare you to meet the admission requirements of Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine. To become a veterinarian, you must graduate from a four-year program at an accredited college of veterinary medicine with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M. or V.M.D.) degree and obtain a license to practice. All veterinary schools require a significant number of credit hours, ranging from 45 to 90 semester hours, at the undergraduate level. However, most schools prefer completion of the bachelor’s degree. Because the requirements vary from school to school, you should contact each school about their specific requirements. Twenty-eight schools in 26 states meet accreditation standards set by the Council on Education of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

Veterinary Medicine provides the knowledge of a general medical science of animals and related applications and research. The departments aim is to contribute to the development of our national and international society by training veterinary professionals, furthering the knowledge in veterinary science, biomedical science and public health. The veterinary curriculum provides students with the basic biomedical education and the practical training of veterinary clinical science. Students complete 2 years of preparatory (80 credits) and 4 years of regular courses (160 credits) and can acquire the government authorized license as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) by passing the national board examination. At present, 95-100% of the graduates have passed the national board examination every year.
