Prepare for work in the fascinating field of animal care. This part-time certificate program provides the knowledge and basic skills needed for entry level employment in animal care facilities. It is intended for individuals with no previous formal training, and for existing staff and volunteers who wish to upgrade their skills. The program emphasizes small animal care in hospital/clinical settings; however the training is valuable and transferable to other animal care settings.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The program is designed primarily to meet the demands for trained personnel in veterinary hospitals and animal care shelters. Graduates may also find work and/or volunteer opportunities in settings such as: animal recovery centres, pet stores, zoos, game farms and similar businesses, grooming businesses, kennels, and large animal farms.
COURSE DELIVERY

The program is delivered on a part-time basis, commencing in the Fall term and concluding in the Spring Term. Courses are typically evening classes with some weekend classes and field trips.

Livestock and poultry contribute significantly to the agro-based economy of Bangladesh. Commercial enterprises aimed for dairy, poultry and meat production are taking the strong roots and the demand for diversified veterinary services expanding with the increased economic growth of the country. Keeping these views in consideration, the department started its endeavor in 2004 in order to fostering quality veterinary education and to produce creative, efficient and modern professional leaders to face the demand of 21st century. The department offers course-credit semester based multidisciplinary Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree. Recently, the department introduced M Phil and PhD program. The graduates of this department have a high prospect to join various prestigious jobs including Bangladesh Civil Service, Government & Non-Government organizations and self-employing income generating activities. A total of 51 students of three batches are studying at present. Currently, 10 teachers are engaged in teaching and research in the department.

Sheridan’s Veterinary Technician Program provides students with an excellent theoretical and practical education, enabling graduates to build and sustain highly rewarding careers providing medical care for animals, and working as members of a professional team in veterinary hospitals and laboratory settings. This program will appeal to students with experience related to animals. They must have a strong background in science and math and strong interpersonal communication skills. Due to the physical demands of the job, they should also possess good manual dexterity and have the ability to lift and carry up to 25 kg. SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES

Students will attend a co-op placement in an approved veterinary facility for 14 weeks between the second and third semesters of the program.
ADDITIONAL COSTS/WORKLOAD

Students should expect to spend approximately $800 – $1,000 on laboratory supplies and equipment, textbooks, lab coat and scrubs. Students can expect to spend 20 – 25 hours each week on assignments outside of their regularly scheduled classes. Due to the nature of the field, weekend and evening assignments are to be expected.

This program has been specifically developed for those individuals who feel a strong attachment toward animals and want to work closely with them on a daily basis. Emphasis is placed on the practical aspects of animal care and management. The primary focus is on dogs and cats but students also receive instruction in the health maintenance and care of laboratory animals.

Many students who select the Animal Care program are actually undecided as to which specific area in the animal care field best suits them. One of the strengths of the program is that it exposes students to the wide variety of opportunities in the animal care profession. The College’s modern, on-campus veterinary clinic houses a kennel, dog training and grooming rooms and laboratory animal rooms.

Graduates of this program are prepared to demonstrate correct kennel management procedures; evaluate and modify canine behavior; perform basic grooming skills; and demonstrate proper health, safety and nutritional practices for companion animals.

The programme is available as a one year course for full-time students. There is also a possibility to complete the MSc over a period of three years.

Course Description
This course aims is to enhance knowledge and understanding of the scientific study of animal behaviour and animal welfare that can be applied effectively in science and practice.

This MSc, initiated by Professor D. Wood-Gush in October 1990 has a strong international reputation and has received the support of many well-known animal welfare organisations in the UK and in Europe, including the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the British Veterinary Association’s Animal Welfare Foundation, the Universities’ Federation for Animal Welfare.

This MSc will further broaden your knowledge of animal behaviour and welfare. At the end of the course we hope that you will be able to:
Demonstrate how scientific assessment of animal welfare can be applied in practical situation.
Undertake philosophical debate relating to animal welfare.
Communicate scientific results and information in research and other forms of debate.
Utilise effective and modern methods for describing and analysing scientific data.
Apply this knowledge in research (PhD) and in more practical environment.

A particular strength of the programme is that it enables its graduates to gain a very good overview of all up to date issues in the area of animal behaviour and welfare.

The following policy governs refunds as a result of withdrawal from the university or individual courses.

100% refundable through the end of the registration change period as designated by the Registrar.
75% refundable through the end of the third week of the semester.

The following payment plans were designed to assist your family as it prepares for and budgets for the cost of your education. You may choose either the Standard Payment Plan or the 10-Payment Plan to fit your need.

Standard Payment Plan
The annual fees will be divided into two semesters. All semester charges minus the pending financial aid for the semester are to be paid by August 5, 2008 for the first semester and January 5, 2009 for the second semester. Work study is not included in determining the payment plan. Once computed, your payment could change if changes are made to a financial aid package.

Any additional fees* such as special course fees, health service charges etc., are to be paid by the 5th of the month following their appearance on the statement.

If you are interested in taking college-level classes and you are neither 18 years of age or older nor a high school graduate, you are considered an Early Admissions student.

Early Admissions acceptance is determined by the College of DuPage Admission and Information office on a case-by-case basis. Your first step is to speak with an admission specialist. Call (630) 942-2380 to schedule a qualifying interview and to discuss the required placement test procedures.

To meet Early Admissions requirements, you must:
Score into Category One on both the C.O.D. reading and writing placement tests. Math and science courses may require math placement test results.
Have a minimum high school GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale or 3.75 on a 5.0 scale.
Complete the Early Admissions Application. It is also available at your high school or can be mailed to you by an admission specialist.

Veterinary Medicine provides the knowledge of a general medical science of animals and related applications and research. The departments aim is to contribute to the development of our national and international society by training veterinary professionals, furthering the knowledge in veterinary science, biomedical science and public health. The veterinary curriculum provides students with the basic biomedical education and the practical training of veterinary clinical science. Students complete 2 years of preparatory (80 credits) and 4 years of regular courses (160 credits) and can acquire the government authorized license as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) by passing the national board examination. At present, 95-100% of the graduates have passed the national board examination every year.
