This course is offered in Bagé in Rural Campus, in Alegrete.

The degree aims to train professionals with a solid scientific basis, able to understand and diagnose the current situation of livestock, as well as to guide the use of modern techniques to make farming economically viable activities. The professional will have power to run the profession in any area of their training. The graduate earns degree in veterinary medicine.

Under the coordination of professor José Carlos Lucena Rosa, this course offers 50 places per semester. The time duration of the course is 5 years (10 semesters), for a total of 4,470 hours / class. The classes take place in the daytime shift.

Among its general characteristics, the Course of Veterinary Medicine, University of the Region of the Campaign’s goal to form a competent professional with an overview and critique of the man in his relation with the environment and the society, dedicated to the branch of science Agrarian that studying animals, providing their cooperation in raising the living standards of the community, whose theoretical and practical knowledge to enable the exercise of the following main activities:

- Promote and implement measures to encourage the production of animals, instructing or adopting the procedures and systems, genetic and food that are most given to improvement of the various species and breeds, including the conditioning of their better adaptation to the environment, aiming to objectives of its creation and the destiny of their products;

- Study, coordination and implementation of techniques of interest to animal breeding, including the service of artificial insemination;

- Inspection and supervision from a health and hygiene of products of animal origin;

- Study and implementation of public health measures in relation to diseases of animals transmissible to humans (zoonoses);

- Perform the technical supervision of the exhibition of animals and of experimental stations for their creation;

- Clinical and surgical obstetrics domestic animals;

- Prophylaxis and control of infectious diseases and parasites of domestic animals;

- Join the examinations that the pets have to be submitted for the purpose of their registration in the companies registry of pedigree;

- Teaching and research, both in the professional sector of the veterinary sector and in basic biological sciences related.

Undergraduate students majoring in veterinary science are required to complete a six-year professional education program in which students learn and study the clinic of various animals including industrial animals, pets, wild animals, etc., the quarantine of animals, fish diseases,
epidemics common to men and animals, and how to breed and improve livestock, how to secure the safety of food and medicine, etc. The basic veterinary courses include anatomy, biology, biochemistry, etc.; the clinical veterinary courses internal medicine, surgery, radiology, etc.; and the applied veterinary courses public health, laboratory and wild animals, fish diseases, etc. Students learn these courses intensively, participating in practices, and deepen the knowledge about such practical areas as biogenetics and the management of animal clinic. In the courses of clinical practices a special emphasis is placed upon the diagnosis and treatment of infected animals, especially cows, horses, pigs, dogs, and cats.

Livestock and poultry contribute significantly to the agro-based economy of Bangladesh. Commercial enterprises aimed for dairy, poultry and meat production are taking the strong roots and the demand for diversified veterinary services expanding with the increased economic growth of the country. Keeping these views in consideration, the department started its endeavor in 2004 in order to fostering quality veterinary education and to produce creative, efficient and modern professional leaders to face the demand of 21st century. The department offers course-credit semester based multidisciplinary Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree. Recently, the department introduced M Phil and PhD program. The graduates of this department have a high prospect to join various prestigious jobs including Bangladesh Civil Service, Government & Non-Government organizations and self-employing income generating activities. A total of 51 students of three batches are studying at present. Currently, 10 teachers are engaged in teaching and research in the department.

Clinical veterinary medicine is a discipline mainly about diagnoses approach and theory of the livestock and poultry. It’s an important basic course in the major of veterinary medicine, bridging the basic courses and major courses. As an introductory course in animal clinic, it plays a very important role in the clinic veterinary medicine major. The teaching aim of this course is to equip the students with common methods, basic theory, basic knowledge, and basic technique of the clinic animal diagnoses and treatment, so that they can find and recognize the ordinary features and symptoms of different animal diseases, and give correct judgement and treatment according to their integrative and precise analyses.

The department offers programs of study and research leading to MS degrees in animal science and poultry science. The candidates have the choice of selecting a thesis or non-thesis program. The non-thesis candidate is required to take additional credits, and his/her research normally will be more field-oriented, with a research report presented instead of a thesis. The department is especially qualified and equipped for graduate study and research in the following areas:

nutrition of livestock and poultry

diseases of livestock and poultry, including preventive immunology and epizootiology of diseases

production of milk, meat, and eggs as related to breeding and feeding

Graduate students in the department may become candidates for a degree in the interfaculty program in nutrition by meeting the requirements described in the Graduate Studies section of this catalogue.

The Veterinary Science Program is a pre-professional program that satisfies the entrance requirements for professional veterinary schools that offer a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree.

Students who satisfy the pre-veterinary coursework, the university’s core requirements and are accepted into a professional veterinary school, may qualify for a bachelor of science degree from the University of Nevada, Reno after completion of 32 credits at the professional school.
