The course of Zootecnia aims to train top-level professional, with solid theoretical and practical knowledge in the areas of creation, management, nutrition, feeding, reproduction and breeding of domestic animals and wildlife as well as in economics and management and rural agribusiness.
Main Activities
The Zootecnista to be a professional with solid technical and scientific training, ready to manage different systems of animal production, with skill and competence to:
know and understand the factors of production and combine them with technical and economic efficiency;
conceive, design and analysis systems, products and processes;
know and act in markets agroindustrial complex;
understand and act in the organization and management and business community;
meet, interact and influence in decision making processes of actors and institutions, management of sectoral policies of its field of action;
develop and use new technologies;
assess the impact of professional activities in the social, environmental and economic;
work in teaching in higher education, design and conduct research, interpret and disseminate results;
act ethically, participating in multidisciplinary teams.

Livestock farming is an industry which produces the necessities of life by the raising of farm animals and special animals. Animal products such as milk, meat, eggs, and honey are important foods for human life and health, and demand for them is increasing annually. Consequently, the improvement in quantity and quality of livestock and the development of high quality animal products are required. The Department of Animal Science aims to train excellent technologists who are able to work in the fields of livestock husbandry and also makes efforts to develop new animal resources and to use biotechnology for the improvement of animal productivity. The major subjects are Animal Breeding, Reproduction, Management, Feeds and Feeding, Nutrition, and Milk and Meat processing.

The department offers programs of study and research leading to MS degrees in animal science and poultry science. The candidates have the choice of selecting a thesis or non-thesis program. The non-thesis candidate is required to take additional credits, and his/her research normally will be more field-oriented, with a research report presented instead of a thesis. The department is especially qualified and equipped for graduate study and research in the following areas:
nutrition of livestock and poultry
diseases of livestock and poultry, including preventive immunology and epizootiology of diseases
production of milk, meat, and eggs as related to breeding and feeding
Graduate students in the department may become candidates for a degree in the interfaculty program in nutrition by meeting the requirements described in the Graduate Studies section of this catalogue.

The Animal and Veterinary Sciences curriculum is designed to provide a broad biological training as well as a thorough understanding of the breeding, diseases, genetics, management, nutrition and physiology of large animals, and laboratory and companion animals. Animal and Veterinary Sciences courses also serve as elective opportunities for students in other agricultural and life sciences, and in other colleges. This department administers the Pre-Veterinary program and provides an opportunity for students to be certified to teach high school biology and agriculture.
