B.Sc. Honours is a four year integrated course comprising of based on course and laboratory works. Students are to complete a total of 32 courses in zoology and 14 courses in two subsidiary subjects (Botany, Biochemistry and Microbiology) in four years.

M.Sc. Final is a one-year degree based either on course works (Group A) or, research and course works (Group B). Students after completing B.Sc. :Honours degree are enrolled to take a research project along with the specialized courses and submit a thesis. Alternatively, Group A students take a practical examination in lieu of thesis. The research is carried out under the supervision of a member of the academic staff of the Department.

M.Phil. is normally a two-year degree based on course works and research. The research results are submitted in the form of a thesis. An oral examination is also required.

Zoology Degree at Punjab Agricultural University

Zoology came into being after the bifurcation of the Department of Zoology and Entomology in 1972. The Fisheries section of the Department was separated as an independent Department of Fisheries in 1994, which was merged again in 2002 and the Department was renamed as the Department of Zoology and Fisheries. The Department then existed at three centres – in the ground floor of the Biological wing. Small Animal Colony, and Fisheries Research Complex with modern facilities to work in the areas of Fisheries, vertebrate Pest Management, Reproductive Biology, Parasitology and Immunodiagnostics. With the creation of the Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in 2006, the Fisheries section and Small Animal Colony have been shifted to that University and the Department has been renamed as the Department of Zoology. At present, the Department exists at the ground floor of the Biological Wing and the second floor of the main building of theCollege of Basic Sciences & Humanities. The Resident Instruction Programme in Zoology comprises undergraduate instruction for the students of College of Agriculture and College of Home Science and post-graduation instruction leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Zoology.

The postgraduate students are trained in Agricultural Ornithology, Rodent Control, Fisheries, Functional Faunal Biodiversity, Reproductive Biology, Parasitology and Immunodiagnostics. At present, the emphasis is on development, commercialization and transfer of technologies for (i) effective, efficient and eco-friendly methods of vertebrate and (non-arthropod) invertebrate pest management, (ii) functional (nutritional , pharmaceutical, and bioindicative) aspects of faunal biodiversity in inland aquatic ecosystems, (iii) Fisheries (iv) Vermicomposting, (v) Reproductive Biology (fertility regulation and use of biomarkers), and (vi) Immunodiagnostics.

The faculty of the Department is actively involved in running several research projects sponsored by different funding agencies like ICAR, UGC, SRTT and Punjab State Govt. besides extending transfer of technology services. The Department is also running Zoological Society, which is a corporate member of the International Society of Zoological Sciences, China.

Animal Welfare and Psychology BSc at Anglia Ruskin University

Course overview
Animal welfare is an increasingly high profile issue, making this degree both important and highly relevant to today’s world. Combined with the study of psychology, it will also give you a deeper understanding of human behaviour and society.

The main aims of this degree are:
to provide you with a broad knowledge base in the field of animal welfare and psychology
to equip you with the analytical and scientific skills necessary to test new ideas and critically review results.
Although formal lectures and seminars will provide you with a good grounding in theory in both disciplines, this course is essentially practice focused and you will have ample opportunity to gain and test a range of practical skills.

A wide range of options, from Parasitology to Contemporary Social Psychology, will allow you to focus on areas of particular interest or to prepare for a preferred career.

When you graduate you will be able to:
design, prepare and execute scientific investigations, and analyse, evaluate and present your findings
show an understanding of how both psychology and animal welfare science can contribute to current philosophical and ethical debates
analyse statistical data and evaluate and critically analyse research papers.
This course covers many themes relevant to the understanding of both humans and animals in the context of today’s world. It will provide many fascinating insights and much opportunity for independent project work, and can provide a route into a range of careers or into postgraduate study.
