A four-year degree in animal science prepares students for animal-related careers in zoos, stables, farms, pet shops and kennels, dude ranches, year-round camps, or research settings. Those planning to move on to Veterinary Medicine need to take the additional chemistry and physics classes that most vet schools require. A degree in animal science will show the veterinary schools admissions committees that you are serious about a career with animals and have the experience to back it up.

Professional schools (medical, dental, pharmaceutical, veterinary) do not require a degree in the sciences for admission to their programs. These professional schools consider majors in almost any discipline to be acceptable for admission.

The basic “core” requirements for admission to most of these professional schools typically include the following:Chemistry 16-20 credits
Physics 8 credits
Biology 4-8 credits

Most medical schools require a minimum of:
1 year of General Chemistry with lab
1 year of Organic Chemistry with lab
1 year of General Biology with lab
1 year of College Physics with lab

The veterinary field is the second fastest-growing profession. Our Vet Tech program combines classroom study with laboratory work, seminars, and a clinical externship to give you a well-rounded education. As a result, you’ll be prepared to take the state exam required to become a licensed technician.

Throughout history, animals have contributed to human society by providing food, materials and companionship and by performing key roles in the workplace, in recreation and in sport.

Animal science is not only a fascinating subject to study. It is also vital for improving standards of animal welfare, protecting livestock from disease epidemics and safeguarding public health from animal borne diseases.

Animal science is also central to addressing other issues of today, such the growing global demand for meat, milk and eggs and how climate change will affect the spread of animal diseases. With current concerns about greenhouse gas emissions from livestock, knowledge of animal science will also be critical in the drive to reduce the environmental impact and improve the sustainability of livestock production systems.

The Applied Animal Science course is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills required for a career in animal science, where employment opportunities continue to be excellent.

With the opening of the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine there is now an opportunity for Wisconsin students to complete all the requirements for admission at our college. The program is basically the same as the Pre-Med program. Animal Science is to discover and disseminate new knowledge about the biology and management of domestic animals; apply this knowledge to benefit society through the efficient, humane, and environmentally responsible use of animals for food, companionship, and recreation; and educate students for careers in animal biology and management.

The animal science major offers an opportunity to apply biology, biochemistry, molecular biology and other life sciences to the study of animal breeding and genetics, nutrition, physiology, growth, behavior and management

Veterinary Medicine provides the knowledge of a general medical science of animals and related applications and research. The departments aim is to contribute to the development of our national and international society by training veterinary professionals, furthering the knowledge in veterinary science, biomedical science and public health. The veterinary curriculum provides students with the basic biomedical education and the practical training of veterinary clinical science. Students complete 2 years of preparatory (80 credits) and 4 years of regular courses (160 credits) and can acquire the government authorized license as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) by passing the national board examination. At present, 95-100% of the graduates have passed the national board examination every year.

Recently, animal science has been extended from traditional farm animal like cattle, pigs, chickens, etc. to wild birds, fish, experimental animals and pets so that animal science now takes in every animal that humans use as objects of resource. Overcoming the limitation of the early industry, animal science has changed as a comprehensive industry that now embraces the industry of processing and distribution. The area of animal science studies has been enlarged and specialized through improving production and inventing new functional materials by the automation of equipment, and bioengineering technique. The purpose of these studies is to accept the change of the new era, to develop studies of animal science and its industry, and to encourage excellent individuals to work in the practical industrial sites.
