Applied Veterinary Parasitology Admission Detail at University of Nairobi

Undergraduate Module I Students (Sponsored by the Kenyan Government): This is done through the national Joint Admission Board (JAB), the body that does admission of students for all public universities in Kenya.

Undergraduate Module II (SELF Sponsored) Students: Because the government sponsorship can cater for very few qualifying candidates, the university gives an option for self sponsorship. In this option, the admission will be done internally at the university. To apply for any undergraduate programme as a self sponsored student, you can obtain an application form from UNES offices upon payment of application fee. Postgraduate Students: Admission to any postgraduate programme at the university is carried out by the Board of Postgraduate Studies (BPS) in close consultancy with the relevant school or faculty.

To apply for a postgraduate admission, application forms can be collected from the BPS/UNES upon payment of application fee. The forms can also be downloaded from the link below, and the application fee paid while submitting the completed forms.

Applied Veterinary Parasitology course description at University of Nairobi

Under the various specialist areas of the courses outlined above, the three disciplines of Animal Parasitology viz. Protozoology, Entomology and Helminthology will be covered with considerable emphasis being placed on problems of the most important parasites in tropical and sub-tropical regions.

Major parasite groups to be addressed under protozoa are Trypanosoma, Theileria, Babesia, Anaplasma, Plasmodium, Coccidia (= Apicomplexa), Toxoplasma, Besnoitia, Sarcocystis, Leishmania and Tritrichomonas.

Helminthology will be covered regarding: helminthiases of ruminants especially the nematodes of the superfamily Trichostrongyloidea, Cysticercosis/Taeniasis, Hydatidosis, Fasciolosis and Schistosomosis, Anthelmintics & Anthelmintic Resistance.

Under entomology, particular attention will be given to Acarina ie. Ticks and mites, biting flies such as Glossina Phlebotomus, Culicidae (Mosquitoes), Simulidae and other biting flies

Applied Veterinary Entry Requirements at University of Nairobi

2.1 The Common Regulations for the Masters degree in all faculties of the University of Nairobi shall apply.

2.2 Those eligible for admission into the course shall be holders of the following degree awards of the University of Nairobi :

(a) Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine or Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with at least a credit in Veterinary Parasitology for B.V.M. candidates or equivalent for candidates from MBChB holders.

(b) Bachelor of Science with a minimum of an Upper-Second Class Honours and where Zoology as a major was offered as a course in the years of undergraduate programme.

2.3. Other candidates who have obtained degrees from other Universities approved by Senate as being equivalent to one of the degrees stated above.
