The veterinarian has to make specific contributions on the health and welfare, ensuring health and quality of animal products, control of zoonoses and the adequacy of the animal production process to the new standards and requirements of sustainable development.

The veterinarian has been increasingly called upon to participate in the production process in relation to animal production and products, health and animal welfare, public health and the environment, these issues which are the four major areas of performance of the veterinarian.

This professional must understand and to integrate the process of regional development of society from a critical view of the chain of animal production. Must be able to develop diagnostic, plan and execute actions at different levels of the production process. In its action, the goals should consider economic, social and cultural needs of different social actors, mediated by the concept of animal welfare, food safety and reducing adverse effects to the environment.

Objectives:
- Training the veterinarian for diagnosis and therapeutic management of major diseases that affect dogs and cats within the universe of clinical small animal;
- Update on various areas covering each area, preparing for the professional trained in the clinical care of small animals;
- Guidance on how to conduct a review into the conduct and writing of research projects involving reports of clinical cases.

The course of specialization Sensu Lato of Clinical Medicine of Small Animals is designed for professionals with higher education in veterinary medicine, intending to act or to act in Veterinary Medicine.

Degrees and Titles: Animal Health Technologists (3 years).
Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry.

Since the domain and the application of methods and techniques, will be able to diagnose, prevent, treat, monitor and participate in the eradication of diseases and disorders that affect the species of animal production and affectionate man, and those that put threatening human health and the economy.
May plan, administer and manage efficiently the companies engaged in animal production and processing of livestock products.
Act as an agent of change in rural areas, will be an important element in the processes of adaptation and technology transfer to farmers.
Using advanced technology and experience, will be able to determine the origin, quality, state of health and safety are the food of animal origin. Also be trained to plan, manage and supervise the processing and preserving food from animal origin intended for human consumption and animal feed.

The vet has always had an important role in animal health and welfare, which has led to improved quality of life. Today, development and industrialization of animal products (meat, milk, fish, etc..) And the consequent demand for quality control and inspection of them, gives the figure of the veterinarian a greater role in society.
The students of the Veterinary UAX receive intensive theoretical and practical training through a personalized education in small groups by highly qualified teachers, which will train them as professionals of the highest order.

To this end, the UAX opened during the 2005-2006 academic year a large Veterinary Hospital equipped with the latest technology from Europe.

Pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, and pre-veterinary medicine are career paths and not majors. While most students planning to enter one of these fields select biology, chemistry, or psychology as a major, pre-medical, pre-dental, and pre-vet students may select any major. The University of Mary Washington has a pre-medical/pre-dental advisor and a pre-veterinary advisor to guide interested students through these curriculums. In addition to meeting with their assigned Academic Advisors, students with an interest in medical or dental school should meet with the Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Advisor (Dr. Loesser-Casey, kloesser@umw.edu) early in the first semester to discuss the requirements for medical or dental school. Students with an interest in veterinary medicine should meet with the Pre-Veterinary Advisor (Dr. Lewis, llewis@umw.edu).

New students interested in entering one of these career fields should complete the following courses during their first semester: CHEM 111, BIOL 121, MATH 121, ENGL 101, and a Physical Education course or a General Education course. New students with AP, IB or transfer credit which substitutes for one or more of these first semester courses should confer with the pre-med or pre-vet advisor during the first week of classes if they have questions concerning alternative coursework.

It provides the student training in technology, scientific and humanistic quality to enable it to carry out actions that will enable it to prevent diagnose and solve interdisciplinary problems in animal and public health, managing production processes in livestock enterprises with sustainable development framework for quality improvement of life and human development.

Participate in the development of Veterinary Public Health for the prevention of zoonoses, as well as in hygiene, protection and preservation of food for human consumption. Efficiently manage human resources and materials in production processes.

As an independent institution the school earned an international reputation in the first half of the 20th century. In the 1990′s a Field Station and a Large Animal’s Clinic was built in Üllõ, outside Budapest providing a bigger supply of horses and cattle for the students in the clinical years. The university arranges a shuttle service to this location situated 25 km-s North of the main campus. In 2000 the veterinary school became an integrated part of the Szt. István University. Since the foundation of the international programs in 1989 around 2000 international students were enrolled, mostly from Germany, Norway, Israel, Greece and Sweden.

The degree granted by the university is recognized without any licensing examinations in all European Union countries (- applies to the nationals of the member states). As a veterinarian you are going to have a wide range of job opportunities in Europe. You can find a lucrative job in a private clinic for pets or in a state office for veterinary hygiene.

Biological Science and Chemistry are the traditional majors for pre-Vet-Med students. However, as with pre-med, any major is an option for a student desiring to become a veterinarian. The coursework requirements are identical to those for Pre-Medicine (see above under Medicine). Some schools have specific requirements for statistics (PSYC 63) and developmental biology/embryology (BIOL 105). Experience working with animals is a universal prerequisite for admissions to veterinary programs, and graduates also must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). It is best to obtain a catalog from the prospective schools and complete the courses required for the school of choice. Close contact with and advising from the advisor for Pre-Health Science in the Biological Science Department is strongly recommended for the entire undergraduate program.
