This is an 8-quarter program with the last quarter consisting of an externship during which students will work with a veterinarian in a veterinary office. The veterinary technology program is accredited by the Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA), a division of the American Veterinary Medical Association. As a student in this program, you are trained to assist veterinarians in all aspects of a veterinary practice, including patient care, medical administration, surgical preparation, equipment maintenance, radiological procedures, laboratory procedures, public relations and office procedures. Upon graduation, the veterinary technician is qualified to take the National Veterinary Technician Exam and/or any other state exam required for registration, certification or licensure in that state.

Our pre-veterinary program will prepare you to meet the admission requirements of Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine. To become a veterinarian, you must graduate from a four-year program at an accredited college of veterinary medicine with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M. or V.M.D.) degree and obtain a license to practice. All veterinary schools require a significant number of credit hours, ranging from 45 to 90 semester hours, at the undergraduate level. However, most schools prefer completion of the bachelor’s degree. Because the requirements vary from school to school, you should contact each school about their specific requirements. Twenty-eight schools in 26 states meet accreditation standards set by the Council on Education of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

Veterinary medicine is one of the fastest growing professions in the country, and Warren Wilson College graduates have been very successful in gaining admission to schools of veterinary medicine. Students may fulfill the entrance requirements for veterinary schools by earning a B.S. degree in Biology or Chemistry. Veterinary schools expect applicants to have had experience in studying and caring for animals, and pre-vet students work on the Farm crew for two years, caring for and managing all aspects of the pig and cattle herds. The combination of a good academic background, Farm Crew experience, and the discipline from the Warren Wilson College Triad educational program benefit the student in applying to veterinary medicine programs and in future professional work. An additional strength of the pre-veterinary medicine program at Warren Wilson College is that the pre-veterinary advisor is a licensed veterinarian with a Ph.D. in animal behavior.

In order to meet the expectations of students and the demands of society for future professionals, the teaching of Veterinary Sciences covers a wide range of applications, ganool cover 11 spread over 2 semesters of courses and studies include:

- The year in clinical pets, of captive and exotic, diagnosing the etiology of disease processes and prescribing the appropriate treatment and developing a scheme prophylactic correctly. Other clinical activity focuses on species of livestock and the role of recreation and sport, relevant not only in the economy of the farms, but also in public health.
- The Public Health whose activity exceeds the intervention at the farm level, there is still a much more comprehensive action, with particular emphasis on control of zoonoses transmitted by domestic animals species, and wild game.
- The Food Technology, the FDA in Food Safety to follow the product from production to consumption, ensuring quality and food hygiene and health of the final product. These and many other related areas such as biotechnology and diagnosis, animal health and epidemiovigilância are essential to the intervention of the veterinarian.

Profile of candidate

Possess a university degree from a recognized institution by the ICFES, preferably veterinarian or veterinarian Zootecnica Zootecnica or its equivalent abroad. Some lines will be accepted biologists, doctors, microbiologists, chemists and pharmaceutical chemists.

The mission of the Breathitt Veterinary Center (BVC) is to provide rapid, accurate diagnostic data that enables veterinarians to make appropriate treatment decisions. The BVC is part of an interdependent team composed of the animal owner, veterinarian, and diagnostic laboratory dedicated to the efficient production of safe animal products to the consumers of Kentucky. The BVC uses the latest scientific knowledge, equipment, and techniques to reduce losses from animal diseases and to promote animal health.

The BVC is fully accredited for all animal species by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD). The scientific disciplines of Pathology, Microbiology, Molecular Diagnostics, Toxicology, Serology, and Virology are provided in the facility. The lists on the following pages include most of the diagnostic procedures performed by the BVC. The BVC continually expands its testing capabilities and strives to incorporate advancements in scientific tests and equipment into its operations.
