veterinary doctors, whose activities are primarily aimed at protecting the health of farm animals in order to obtain high-quality products, the prevention and elimination of diseases common to humans and animals, providing medical assistance to «lower our brothers». Faculty graduates work in collective and state farms, joint-stock company, zverovodcheskih, apiarian and fish farms, the veterinary stations to combat the diseases of animals in veterinary clinics, water, rail, border and customs services, in zoos and circuses, public parks, Hippodrome at meat plants biofabrikah and dairy factories, meat and dairy monitoring stations, markets, research and industrial laboratories, research institutes, teachers in vocational schools, colleges and universities.
Over 82 years of existence, the faculty in the specialty 310800 – «Veterinary» 16805 was prepared by experts. Veterinary Faculty of the Institute of Veterinary Medicine, took place in the region for the quality produced by specialists on the staff of teachers and material-technical base of higher education institutions and related departments of Siberia and the Far East. As a result of certifying examination 2000, the quality of training at the veterinary faculty of ICM OmGAU recognized to satisfy the basic requirements. At the 14 faculties of veterinary faculty employed 137 teachers, including professors, doctors of sciences – 18, assistant professors, candidates of sciences – 75. Currently, training of veterinary doctors in the Faculty is carried out on a part-time and full-time form with a lifetime of training for 4 years and 5 years. Each year, admission to full-time office in the specialty of veterinary 225 people at the distance – 25.

Veterinary Microbiology Graduate at National Chung Hsing University

The main curriculum of the Graduate Institute of Veterinary Microbiology is designed to prepare the graduates for a career in research and teaching in veterinary microbiology, with special emphasis on applied microbiology, molecular biology, pathogenesis of microorganisms and biotechnology. The main goal of the Institute is to improve the quality of the diagnostic techniques and quarantine for the purposes of disease control, prevention, and public health due to emerging complexity of diseases and the importance of zoonotic as well as tropical animal diseases.

History:

Founded in 1994, this graduate institute has provided M. S. program ever since. All teaching faculty are well qualified with Ph. D. degree. A highly competitive entrance exam is held out each year for a growing number of students who take interests in the enrollment. Currently, this institute houses 24 M. S. students who came from a broad varieties of B. S. training backgrounds encompassing veterinary, agricultural, medical, and life sciences. It is the expectation of this institute that, upon graduation, each student will be strengthened in his/her ability to apply concurrent biological technology in veterinary microbiology. To cope with the trend in the field and to further help out the urgent demand from the national biotechnology industries, we have been preparing for a more intensive and advanced Ph. D. training program. The ministry of education has evaulated the graduate institute and approved for our initiation of Ph. D. training program in the year of 2001.

Course and Research:

This institute is the only institute in Taiwan that provides programs for master degree in veterinary microbiology. The courses emphasize not only on the basic and clinical application of biotechnology to veterinary services, but also on basic principle and advanced knowledge of regulation, pathogenecity and immunology of microorganisms. The future goals of this institute are: (1) Application of biotechnology in industry (2) Improvement of diagnostic techniques (3) Study on molecular pathogenecity and immunology of pathogenic organisms. Because biotechnology is the main goal for the development of this institute, other institutes and departments in National Chung Hsing University (NCHU), including those in College of Agriculture, College of Life Science, and College of Science could have collaboration with this institute. Therefore, the teaching and research in the development of biotechnology in NCHU could be integrated.

Veterinary Medicine Degree at National Chung Hsing University

Veterinary Medicine was established in 1970 and the Masters program started in 1982. From 1990, undergraduate student intake was increased to 70 per year and divided into two classes. The Doctorate program (Ph.D.) was incorporated in 1993. To enhance the clinical training of students and also to provide veterinary services to the public, the affiliated veterinary teaching hospital was built in 1980. The Graduate Institute of Veterinary Microbiology was established in 1994 and the Graduate Institute of Veterinary Pathology in 1998.In 1999, the Ministry of Education of ROC approved the establishing of an independent College of Veterinary Medicine, the first in this country. Presently, The College comprises of one department, Department of Veterinary Medicine (including Master and Ph.D. programs), two graduate institutes. Graduate Institute of Veterinary Microbiology and Graduate Institute of Veterinary Pathology, and an affiliated unit; the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The permanent academic staff of the College as of Feb. 2004 stands at 35, and there are 106 graduate and 381undergraduate students. The ratio of the permanent faculty staff to the undergraduates is 1:13.9. We strive to train-qualified veterinarians and highly motivated researchers in veterinary and related fields.

The short and mid-term planning of the College is to remain a single veterinary department and to establish related institutes for graduate programs. The undergraduate education policy is basically clinics oriented with relevant support from the various graduate institutes. The training and curriculum of the undergraduate education are tailored to cope with the demands and expectations of the contemporary society in Taiwan. The faculty staff members strive to provide high quality veterinary education, maintain and advance their state-of-art level of research, and have been very active in promoting veterinary-related activities and providing veterinary services to the local farmers and the public at large. Considering the society’s need for in-depth veterinary care for pets and other companion animals as well as for animals for leisure and for appreciation, emphasis will be placed on the training in diagnosis and therapy of diseases of these animals.

The faculty staff also coordinate with each other to form teaching and research groups for enhancing their effectiveness. They also participate in animal health maintenance program of nearby farms, quarantine, prophylaxis and epidemiological control as well as therapeutic services to large, small, aquatic, exotic and wild animals. The College has not only the privilege but also the obligation to provide the best veterinary clinical training and research in this country, and be at par with the international standards.

International Cooperation Since 1971, our University has been active in establishing relationships with other universities abroad. Up to the present, we have cooperated with a great number of universities in the U.S., Germany, Australia, Japan, Austria, Korea, Denmark and other countries. Of these universities, over thirty are formally recognized sister universities of ours. We often exchange scholars and students. We often share academic results. We sometimes cooperate in projects. And we frequently visit each other.Since its establishment, this university has really had remarkable achievements in teaching, research, and service. Many of our alumni have indeed become the elite of our society. And many of them have distinguished themselves in foreign lands. Medical & Veterinary Microbiology Undergraduate at University Of Glasgow

This programme has been designed specifically to provide theoretical background knowledge and practical skills training in the application of modern molecular techniques to the study of microbial pathogenesis. The focus is on selected pathogens that cause infections in humans and domesticated animals.
Content

The programme comprises a 12-week taught course entitled Molecular & practical aspects of bacterial pathogenicity, and two 18-week research projects.

The taught component comprises:

25 lectures on molecular pathogenesis of bacterial infection
Four laboratory classes from the above course
Additional lectures in veterinary bacteriology
12 lectures on molecular methods plus additional laboratory classes
Lectures and seminars from the Honours option course: Molecular approaches to bacterial pathogenicity.

Students also participate in the graduate school’s research skills training programme which includes sessions on:

Experimental design
Library skills (literature searching & review)
Presentation skills
Scientific writing
Statistics
Radiation protection
Research ethics
Laboratory safety
IT skills.

The 18-week research projects are the main focus of the programme, they give real experience of cutting-edge research and allow significant scientific progress to be made. Project titles are chosen to reflect students’ interests and the skills that they wish to acquire. At the end of each project, students produce a scientific report and present their findings to the class.

Microbiologists involved are located in state-of-the-art buildings, which have outstanding facilities and equipment for research.

Research in the Division of Infection & Immunity was given the top score of 5* in the last UK Research Assessment Exercise.

A second class Honours degree or equivalent (eg GPA of 3.0 or above) in a biological science or related subject.
