The animal industry is a booming and growing industry. Recent years have seen an increase in biotechnological development within animal production as well as an expansion in animal health industries
More than half a billion dollars is spent yearly on animal health sales and almost as much again on its research in the US alone. This increased reliance on biological and veterinary sciences together with biotechnology, has created the need for appropriately trained scientists. Our new BSc (Hons) in Bioveterinary Science has been developed to support that need. It has been designed to meet the needs of students and employers looking for practical skills and knowledge in the professions allied to the practice of veterinary medicine and to that of the animal industry in general, and builds on the existing expertise and reputation of the Department in this field.

Veterinary Science provides world-class veterinary and para-veterinary education. Its programmes focus on improving maintenance of animal health, welfare, production, veterinary public health and the conservation of natural resources, thereby developing the welfare of communities in South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. The Faculty’s track record for conducting innovative and ethically approved research through centres of excellence is internationally recognised.
GENERAL
The degree programme structure for Veterinary Science was changed to a 3-year BSc degree programme followed by a 4-year BVSc degree programme. The BSc programme is custom-made for Veterinary Science and is offered by the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences and the Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria. The BVSc degree programme is offered by the Faculty of Veterinary Science at Onderstepoort.
LANGUAGE MEDIUM
Lectures are only presented in English in both these programmes.
UP ADMISSIONS TEST
The UP Admission Test is not applicable to applicants to the University Diploma in Veterinary Nursing.
* Kindly note that the Diploma in Veterinary Nursing is under review with the purpose of upgrading the qualification to a 3-year BSc degree. Inquiries can be directed to Tel +27 (0)12 529 8061 or +27 (0)12 529 8476.
** Note that the subject Life Orientation is not included when calculating APS.
SELECTION
Both programmes involve selection procedures based on academic merit and an interview, if required.
Selection for the BVSc degree will take place after the successful completion of all the first and secondyear modules of BSc(Veterinary Biology) for admission to the third year. Students who are selected to continue with the third year of Veterinary Biology may continue with the BVSc programme if they complete their third year successfully. The total number of students in the BVSc degree programme will be restricted to 135 students.

Our Veterinary Biosciences programme provides excellent training for students intending to work in laboratories related to animal science. It also provides a broad education in the biosciences, including the interface between human and veterinary medicine, for those with interests in veterinary sciences who may then go on to work in a wide variety of fields. It does not provide recognised training for those wishing to practise as a vet, although it may be suitable as an entry point for such a recognised programme.
Our modular programme structure provides a broad range of skills in your first year that ensure a solid foundation on which to build for your specialisation in the final year. Transfer between this and other programmes in the biological sciences is usually possible at this stage.
Your second year combines further studies in fundamental sciences with some specialised animal science modules. The optional professional training year, after your second year, will complement your academic knowledge and enhance your employment prospects upon completion of your degree. Your final year consists of core modules in specialised aspects of animal science, combined with a choice of a wide range of optional modules, together with a research project conducted in one of our own research laboratories or, subject to arrangement, neighbouring research institutes.

Veterinary Sciences and the Animal Science have combined their efforts to offer B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in animal and veterinary sciences (see listing under this title). Several options within the major are available including preveterinary medicine and animal biology. Undergraduate course offerings of the Department of Veterinary Sciences are listed under the title of pathobiology. They were designed to familiarize students with the principles of animal disease and the basic biological and biomedical sciences.
The department operates the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory, an animal disease diagnostic laboratory. This laboratory provides valuable hands-on experience for students interested in laboratory animal care, laboratory procedures, and research. Excellent faculty advisers are available for students interested in preveterinary medicine, microbiology, and animal biology.
Students interested in graduate degree programs involving research in domestic and wildlife disease problems or parasitology should consult the Graduate Bulletin.
