Zoology is one of the oldest and well-established departments in North India, which has completed 100 years of teaching and research on May 1, 2002. It was shifted from Hoshiarpur to present campus at Chandigarh in July 1960. During these hundred years, it has many landmarks as its teaching and research activities changed from classical to the most recent ones in Zoology, and remained at the forefront both nationally and internationally.
It has a strong faculty of 6 professor and 2 lecturers. Based on the performance of teaching and research potentials of the staff members, UGC had recognized the Department for Special Assistance Programme (SAP) in 1985 and extended it for two terms. Under the COSIST Programme, a grant of Rs. 42.5 lakhs was sanctioned for a five year term (1996-2001). 3rd Phase of SAP started from 2001-2006 with financial aid of Rs. 65.75 lakhs. On completion of the 3rd Phase of SAP, UGC review committee upgraded the department for CAS(Centre of Advance Study) with the financial assistance of Rs. 78.25 lakhs.

Facilities & Assets
Laboratory facilities
The Department is having six laboratories viz.
Cell & Molecular biology laboratory
Animal Ecology & Wildlife Biology laboratory
Entomology laboratory
Fish Biology & Fishery Science laboratory
Physiology & Biochemistry laboratory
One general laboratory for the other semesters
Other than the said laboratories the department is having one Computer Lab, one cell culture lab and one Central Instrumentation Center.
Zoology had its origin in the Department of Botany in 1969-70. With the rapid advances in the field of animal science, it was felt necessary to extend it into an independent and full-fledged Department. Thus the Department of Zoology started functioning in the middle of 1972. Late Professor Dr. Mustafizur Rahman was appointed the first Headed. Since then the Department of has developed at a fast rate to its present state with a view to meeting the growing demand for trained personnel in the fields of classical as well as applied Zoology. Many changes have taken place over the last three decades.
Many of the ex-students have found careers in academic and research organizations, while other have already secured important positions in the public and private sectors of the country. The exchange of ideas between staff and students is encouraged through seminars where research findings are presented and discussed.
Zoology was established in June 1968. It is one of the oldest and largest Department in the Punjabi University, Patiala, Punjab India. It has contributed immensely for the development of zoological studies in Punjab as well as North India. This Department is recognized by NAAC peer team as one of best Science Department of the University. It has been selected as FIST sponsored Department by DST, Govt. of India, Ministry of Science and Technology to build up the infrastructure for post graduate, teaching and research, in 2006. The UGC has supported the department with DRS – I project under SAP since 2007.
The in-position faculty has earned acclaim at the National and International levels. The faculty members of the Department have been actively engaged is promoting research in diverse fields such as Biodiversity, Cell and Molecular Biology, Animal Physiology, Cytogenetics, Entomology and Parasitology.
The Department has been sanctioned 44 major research project by different funding agencies such as the UGC, DST, CSIR, ICAR, USPL-480, MoEF, PSCST and PPCB. It has produced 110 Ph.D’s, 78 M.Phil and more than 800 M.Sc. students so far. To this date 11 conferences/symposia have been organized by this Department, out of which 3 were International (2000, 2005, 2007). The Department has contributed more than 1140 research papers in different National and International journals of repute, which are in addition to 52 books published till date.
Zoology is the scientific study of animals. The School of Biological & Earth Sciences offers a uniquely tailored Zoology degree programme that explores the great diversity of living and extinct animal species and demonstrates how knowledge of functioning organisms can be put into practical use. It encompasses all aspects of biology, from biochemistry and cell biology to ecology and behaviour. It examines animals in the context of their evolution and their environment.
Building on a strong foundation in general biology (Level 1), the highly flexible modular programme provides students with the academic freedom to develop a deeper understanding of their own selected areas of zoological interest. The School prides itself on its research record and our staff are actively working in many fields of zoology, including animal energetics, endocrinology, molecular biology, parasitology, behaviour, conservation, taxonomy, physiology, ecology and palaeobiology. Many animal groups are represented in our current research programmes, including invertebrates such as insects and marine worms, birds, reptiles, large mammals and primates. An enthusiastic and supportive staff of active researchers will encourage students to focus their interests in the Honours year (Level 3) when they will be expected to select and conduct an original research project.
We are well-resourced and ideally situated to provide zoological instruction and practical experience of high quality (see below). Our modern research and teaching facilities enhance the delivery of laboratory based practical work. Located within easy reach of the City Centre and the North-West motorway network, we are able to exploit a wealth of local facilities and fieldwork sites to further support your theoretical studies. These include ready access to three major zoological collections (Chester Zoo, Knowsley Safari Park and the Blue Planet Aquarium) and an extensive network of dedicated research centres, museums, and industrial contacts. Many diverse habitat sites are studied including coastal sites in North Wales and Lancashire, inland ecosystems in Snowdonia and the Lake District, as well as a variety of Southern European ecosystems (usually in Mallorca).
The biological sciences deal with the basic principles of all living things: structure, function, and ecological associations. An A.S. degree is needed to continue in a variety of fields such as allied health professions, education, medical school, agriculture, forestry, Environmental Protection Agency, as well as state and national agencies dealing with biology, various industries, and consulting agencies.
Recommended electives for this degree are CHEM 277 and 278 (Organic Chemistry I and Lab); CHEM 287 and 288 (Organic Chemistry II and Lab); MATH 160 (Survey of Calculus) or MATH 170 (Analytical Geometry and Calculus I); and PHYS 111 or PHYS 112.
Completion of the suggested coursework results in an associate degree and meets the general core requirements at all Idaho public universities. The suggested coursework normally fulfills the first half of baccalaureate degree requirements in Biology, Botany, or Zoology. Course selection should be tailored to match requirements defined by intended transfer institutions.
